Roma tomatoes, also known as plum tomatoes, originated in South America and were cultivated and bred in Italy for their dense, meaty texture and low moisture content. They became popular for cooking due to their rich flavor and fewer seeds, making them ideal for sauces and pastes. Today, Roma tomatoes are widely grown in Mexico, the United States, and Italy, and are a staple in Mediterranean and Latin American cuisines.
