About the varieties

Roma

Roma tomatoes, also known as plum tomatoes, originated in South America and were cultivated and bred in Italy for their dense, meaty texture and low moisture content. They became popular for cooking due to their rich flavor and fewer seeds, making them ideal for sauces and pastes. Today, Roma tomatoes are widely grown in Mexico, the United States, and Italy, and are a staple in Mediterranean and Latin American cuisines.

Key Benefits

  • Low in water and seeds, making them perfect for sauces
  • Rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant
  • Excellent source of vitamin C, potassium, and folate
  • Low in calories and high in fiber

Fun Facts

  • Sauce star: Roma tomatoes are the go-to choice for tomato sauces, pastes, and canning.
  • Lycopene powerhouse: The deep red color comes from lycopene, linked to heart and skin health.
  • Culinary favorite: Chefs love Romas for their firm texture and bold flavor when roasted or stewed.
  • Hybrid history: The modern Roma tomato was developed in the 1950s by the USDA.

Grape

Grape tomatoes are a relatively recent variety, originally bred in Southeast Asia before gaining popularity in the U.S. in the 1990s. Smaller and meatier than cherry tomatoes, they’re prized for their sweet flavor, firm bite, and long shelf life. They’re commonly grown in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, and are now a snack-time favorite in households and lunchboxes.

Key Benefits

  • Sweet, crisp flavor makes them perfect for snacking
  • High in antioxidants including lycopene and beta-carotene
  • Supports immune function with vitamin C
  • Great source of fiber for digestive health

Fun Facts

  • Snack sensation: Their size and sweetness make grape tomatoes a popular healthy snack.
  • Less watery: Grape tomatoes have thicker skin and firmer flesh than cherry tomatoes.
  • Long-lasting: Their durable skin helps them stay fresh longer post-harvest.
  • Color variety: Though commonly red, they also come in yellow, orange, and even dark purple varieties.

Round

Often referred to as slicing or globe tomatoes, round tomatoes are the most common variety found in supermarkets. They originated in the Andes region and were domesticated by the Aztecs and Incas before spreading globally via Spanish explorers. Round tomatoes are incredibly versatile and used in everything from burgers to salads, soups, and juices.

Key Benefits

  • Balanced flavor perfect for fresh eating and cooking
  • Packed with vitamins A and C, plus potassium
  • Lycopene-rich, supporting heart and prostate health
  • Supports hydration with high water content

Fun Facts

  • Burger bestie: These tomatoes are the classic slice used in sandwiches and burgers.
  • Global staple: Tomatoes are the most consumed vegetable (technically a fruit) in the world.
  • Juice giant: Round tomatoes are often used to make tomato juice due to their juiciness.
  • Ancient superfood: Early Europeans were once afraid to eat tomatoes, calling them “poison apples”!
